General informationand facilitiesBuilding accessAll engineering students are allowed to enter theCity Campus Engineering buildings 401 and 402(20 Symonds Street) and building 405 (5 GraftonRoad) between 6am and midnight seven days aweek, including public holidays.These hours alsoapply to all study areas and computer labs. Thefollowing rules also apply:Access/Campus cards are not transferable underany circumstances. Please report loss or theft tothe Security Office on extension 85000. You willneed to buy a replacement card, once you havereported the loss. This is not a deposit and thereare no refunds. For any questions please [email protected] The main doors to the building will be openbetween 7.30am-6.30pm.Health and safety You will need your access card to enter and exitthe building between 6.00-7.30am and6.30pm-midnight. During these times, you mayenter and exit the building via door 401.300L1/1(Level 3 leading in from the underpass).Smoking is prohibited in all Faculty of Engineeringcampuses, outdoor spaces and buildings, inaccordance with the University’s smoke-free policy. You are required to start packing up yourbelongings and vacate the building by 11:45pm,as doors will lock at midnight. Security willensure that the buildings are clear of occupants. Access cards will not open any internal orexternal doors after midnight, seven days aweek, including public holidays. If you are in thebuilding at this time, you must call Security. Aguard will establish why you are still in thebuilding, record your ID number, and will needto inform the Faculty. This could result in yourafter-hours access being suspended.Access to the labs is based on your specialisationand year of study. You are required to havepermission from lab managers to gain access.Newmarket Campus is open to students withaccess cards between 7am and 11pm sevendays a week.Always carry your valid access card and ID cardwith you. Do not lend your access card to anyone– this is considered as a breach of the UniversitySecurity Policy and may result in immediatedeactivation of your card until further notice.Access cardsTo gain access to the building after hours, and tocertain labs that will be required, you mustactivate the card by completing the online4application form via https://accesscard.foe.auckland.ac.nz. It may take up to two weeks foryour card to be activated and your card must berenewed at the beginning of every year. To renew it,follow the same process as your initial application.Please read the following health and safetyinformation carefully. This is intended for allstudents within the Faculty of Engineering. It isnot a complete guide to safety matters but detailsbasic safety practices and procedures that needto be followed to ensure the health and safety ofeveryone within the faculty.The University’s health and safety policy and thefaculty’s safety information are available atwww.engineering.auckland.ac.nz/safety.You must ensure you are familiar with all providedHealth and Safety information.Essential safety personnelYour first point of contact is your academic leader,lecturer, tutor or supervisor. Complete any required health and safety training Follow health and safety instructions. If you areunsure, in doubt of what to do, or have concernsyou must seek help from your lecturer, tutor orsupervisor Speak to your lecturer, tutor or supervisor assoon as possible about any personal health andsafety concerns Report all accidents, near misses, ill health andbuilding/equipment damage Where required, wear personal protectiveclothing, personal protective equipment, anduse provided safety equipment Familiarise yourself with the procedures andlimitations for working alone Do not interfere with health and safetyequipment, devices or signage. If you finddamage, or there is a malfunction, please alertyour supervisor/leader immediatelyPlease note that it is a condition of your enrolmentto cooperate with the University in regards tohealth and safety. Failure or refusal to carry outyour responsibilities may have consequences foryour further study.Risk AssessmentsAs you advance in your studies and in your futureengineering career, you will be required toparticipate in the risk assessment process. You willinitially be obliged just to follow risk assessments,but will later be required to write them. Riskassessment training and guidance will be providedto you as the need arises.Right of refusal to participate indangerous activitiesSome activities performed by the faculty willpossess a high health and safety risk if they are notproperly managed. In the vast majority of cases,risks will be identified and appropriately controlled toan acceptable level and you will be informed of whatyou need to do to remain safe before you start anyactivity.You have the right to not proceed with any activityif you feel, on reasonable and objective grounds,that it poses a danger to yourself or others. Youmust then immediately raise your concerns withyour academic leader or the health and safetymanager so that we can address the issues beforeany activity begins.Faculty safety rulesIn order to manage risks, we need to limit youraccess to equipment, labs and workshops until youhave been provided with information about thepossible hazards you may encounter, and the safemethods of work you must follow.The following rules apply to all students:1.I f you create a risk, you own the risk. If yourresearch or work could potentially cause harmor damage, you must work with your supervisor,or academic leader, to reduce risk as far as it isreasonably practicable before you start.2. You must not enter a laboratory, workshop orstore room unless given specific authorisation,or are escorted by an authorised person. Ineither case, you should seek advice on anyhazards you may encounter before you enter.Note: Having access cards or keys does notmean you are authorised to access a facility, norpermit you to allow another person into thatarea.3. You must not attempt to operate anyequipment or apparatus unless you have beenauthorised and shown how to use it safely.4. When working, keep your work area clean andtidy, and make sure your bags and/or personalitems do not cause trip hazards.5. When you have finished for the day, make sureall tools and equipment are returned to theirproper storage, the area is tidy, and equipmentis properly shut down. Wash your hands if youneed to.6. You must not eat or drink while you are inworkshops and laboratories.Laboratories and WorkshopsStudents may only use the laboratories andworkshops where they have been given specificauthority to work by their course coordinators and/or academic supervisors and technical staff incharge.5

All students will be required to wear appropriatepersonal protective equipment depending onwhich laboratory and workshop you work. Personalprotective equipment, such as safety glasses, labcoats, masks, hearing protection will be providedby laboratories and workshops. Some laboratoriesmight require students to wear protectivelaboratory coat, students are permitted to weartheir own if they wish (boiler suits/overalls orsimilar protective clothing are also acceptable formost labs: the student will need to confirm thesuitability with their course tutor/lab coordinator).Because there are hazardous substances andvarious types of equipment in the laboratories andworkshops, there are guidelines around their use:1.You should not work alone in a laboratory orworkshop2.You should only carry out work you are familiarwith. Specific in-person training will berequired and provided for undertakinghazardous operations. This includes (but notlimited to):3. Who are my academic leaders or supervisors? How do I get out of the building in the event of anevacuation? What are the likely emergencies I will encounterand what will I need to do? What are the emergency contact numbers? Where is the nearest fire alarm, first aid kit anddefibrillator? Where are the isolation controls/emergencyshut-off procedures for the equipment I am goingto use? Do I need specific training to use items, equipmentor machinery? What protective or safety equipment do I need touse to do my work safely? Handling or mixing chemicals Wiring up electrical equipment What other work is being performed nearby? Willit interfere with my work? Will my work affectothers? Using machine tools other than batterypowered ones Using equipment designated by thetechnicians in charge of the laboratory ashazardous Am I allowed to perform low risk work alone,or do I need a supervisor while I am working? Using welding or oxy-acetylene equipmentWhen leaving a laboratory or workshop,students and staff are responsible for makingsure that all equipment and services are in asafe condition. This means, for example,turning off any electricity, gas and water thathave been used. Can I do my work after normal working hours,or do I need to leave when the staff go home?If you can’t answer these questions, please seeyour academic leader or supervisor or thetechnical staff in charge of the laboratory orworkshop.What to do if you have anaccident or incidentIf you have any questions relating to MDLS, pleasecontact the MDLS Core Technical Services Team [email protected] should report incidents, injuries andobservations to the Student Contact Centre via AskAuckland or via their academic supervisor.InductionsFor emergency assistan
